According to the National Institute of Mental Heath, approximately 10% of the U.S. population suffers from phobias with the various types unlimited in number, as anyone can create a phobia for anything that someone may be irrationally fearful of. There are of course certain phobias that are more common than others, such as arachnophobia—the extreme fear of spiders, acrophobia—the extreme fear of heights and cynophobia—the extreme fear of dogs. Topping the “Phobia 100” as the most common is ophidiophobia, or the extreme fear of snakes, which according to Wikipedia, affects about one-third of the adult population worldwide.
